Stays at home for a year

Image of Mr Scott
Norman Stott is 79 and was diagnosed with dementia three years ago. He is physically fit and still goes out each day for a walk. He is adamant that he should stay in his own home. His daughter, Rachel, and her husband live some miles away and although committed to supporting him for as long as possible were worried whether he was managing. A Just Checking system was installed a year ago to assess what was happening.

Rachel logs on each morning to see what sort of night her father has had before she rings him at 9am. She logs on again when she is home from work in the late afternoon to check that he has returned home after his daily walk. Her husband logs on at work, or via his mobile phone. They visit or go out with Norman most weekends.

The system provides peace of mind and enables Norman's family to see that he is visiting the kitchen to prepare meals, that the home care team have visited, and to verify what has happened in the day if Norman is unable to remember. The family says the system provides information which shows Norman is managing, and which will help them to give the right prompts and support as Norman's condition progresses.

When Norman suffered a bout of pneumonia and his mental health deteriorated further; he eventually moved to residential care. However, Rachel is in no doubt that...

"Without using the Just Checking system we would have gone down the residential care route far sooner."
