How difficult is it to install?
It’s very easy. You don’t need any professional help or DIY skills to install Just Checking because all the sensors are wireless and simply stick on with Velcro. You can watch a video on installing Just Checking here.
Why is Just Checking better than CCTV?
Cameras are more compromising of a person’s privacy, and you can’t sit and watch a camera all day. The Just Checking chart provides a 24 hour summary at a glance, and this is much more useful for planning care and knowing when to support.
How up to date are the activity charts?
The system updates every 5 minutes, so it is virtually real time.
What is the best way to explain this to my family member?
It is useful to explain Just Checking as a system which can help them to stay in their own home, and help you to support them. This introductory leaflet may help. We have a number of people with dementia, who have bought the system for themselves.
Do I need my family member’s permission to install this?
If your family member has the capacity to consent, then you must respect this. The introductory leaflet may help you to talk this over with your family member. If a person does not have the capacity to consent, then decisions can be made in their best interests.
Can other family members log on too?
Yes, several members of a family can log on if they have a password, and from wherever they are in the world.
What if I forget my login and password?
Your login will be your e-mail address. Click Forgotten Password just below the password box to have your password resent.
Is it likely that people will be visited less with this type of technology?
Families tell us that yes, they do sometimes change their pattern of visiting. It allows them to concentrate on visiting for social reasons, rather than frequent, short “checking” visits to reassure themselves. Older people and their families get more out of a single longer social visit, where perhaps they have a meal, or go out together, than several short ‘checking’ visits.
Does this infringe on the person’s privacy?
Just Checking uses movement sensors to indicate that someone is up and moving about their home. There are no cameras and you can’t actually see the person. For vulnerable people who live alone, any concerns about this type of monitoring need to be balanced against risks to their safety and the need for support. There is less privacy if a person moves to a care home.
But won’t my relative still feel it’s an intrusion?
For a person with memory problems, Just Checking can be less intrusive than other forms of intervention, such as several pop-in visits a day. Not all visits are welcomed, particularly if a person cannot remember care staff.
How does the system comply with human rights legislation?
Just Checking supports the principle of safeguarding against deprivation of liberty, brought in by the Mental Health Act 2007. People who lack the mental capacity to consent to care should be cared for in a way that does not limit their rights or freedom of action. For most people this means being able to stay in their own home for as long as possible and to be supported in the least restrictive way, which Just Checking can do a lot to assist with.
Does the system raise any alerts?
Just Checking is primarily an information system, not an alarm system. There are other telecare systems which are designed to raise alerts about particular risks, such as leaving the house at night. Details of telecare services in your area.
What if I need extra help?
The beauty of the Just Checking system is its simplicity. We think you’ll find all the instructions you need on this website – usually in an easy to follow video. In the unlikely event that you have any difficulties with the system, you can call our support helpline and one of our consultants will do their best to assist.
Sounds interesting but I’m not sure whether it will be useful.
The only way to tell for sure is to try it out. That’s why we offer a low risk chance to assess the system. All you have to do is subscribe to Just Checking for a minimum of 3 months. If you are in any way unsure at the end of that period, you can simply return the kit and we will refund your deposit.
