Just Checking is a highly portable, easy-to-install assessment kit, which puts the person with dementia right at the centre of an assessment.

Sometimes it is difficult to make an accurate home assessment of someone with dementia if they live on their own.  Their account may not be reliable, and information from relatives and neighbours may be based on partial or anecdotal knowledge of the person’s daily routine. It is not unusual for incidents to be exaggerated because people think that "something should be done".

The Just Checking system provides objective information on daily activities and builds a more comprehensive picture of a person’s capabilities in their own home where they orientated and at ease. People with short-term memory loss may still be holding on to long-ingrained daily routines. The system helps with the planning of appropriate care which concentrates on what they can still do for themselves, so that the person’s independence is supported and not undermined with unnecessary visits. Practitioners say that it gives the person with dementia a new means to communicate their capabilities and real "voice" in the planning of their care.

1 in 3 of all local authorities are using Just Checking for assessment and care planning. The system is installed and moved from service user to service user by the community care teams themselves.

Practitioners FAQ’s

What is in the Just Checking Professional kit?

  • 5 movement sensors
  • 2 door sensors
  • Controller which receives data from the sensors and uploads it to a web-server via integral mobile phone unit. Controller is plugged in to a mains power socket.
  • Velcro pads
  • Robust carry case
  • Installation instructions and video

What is covered in the subscription?

Subscription covers:

  • Database and web-service infrastructure, and access to the data and management system
  • Mobile data charges (the controller uploads its data every 5 mins)
  • Unlimited number of log-ins
  • Log-on as often as required
  • Log-on for as long as required
  • Annual battery replacement (automatic reminder, and battery pack send out each year)
  • Replacement Velcro
  • Helpline for staff

Are sensors unique to the kit they are in?

Movement sensors are identical between kits. A differently coded set can be provided where installations are likely to be in very close proximity (next door to each other).

Door sensors are unique and each controller is programmed with the door sensors associated to it. This can be reprogrammed remotely from the Just Checking office.

Can I add sensors?

Additional sensors can be added to a system (up to 20 sensors in total).

  • Movement sensors - £45 each
  • Door sensors - £60 each

Can I get replacement sensors?

Faulty sensors are replaced under warranty. We aim to post out first class within 24 hours of being reported.

Replacements if sensors are lost, purchase prices as above. We aim to send out first class within 24 hours of being ordered.

Who installs the system?

You do. Just Checking is easy to install and no specialist installer is required. We provide an installation guide, and there is an installation video on the website. You can even try it out in your own home for a night or two. We will come and run a training session for your team if you require.

Can I change the names on sensors?

Sensors are labelled on the back, and the chart is laid out in a specific order with these names. You can change the names and the order on the chart when you are logged on to the Just Checking Professional system as a manager.

Family carers can ring Just Checking to change sensor names and order, if required.

Does the system raise any alerts?

Just Checking is primarily an information system, not an alarm system. However, it can be set to give a text alert of someone leaves their home at an unexpected time, such as during the night. More information...

Does the system use batteries and what is the battery life?

Movement sensors have 2 x AAA batteries, replaced once a year.

Door sensors has single lithium cell battery, replaced every 3 years.

Just Checking sends out a reminder when batteries need replacing, and supplies the battery pack. Battery replacement is included in the annual subscription.

What happens if there is a power cut?

The controller stops receiving the data from the sensors, so there is no data collection. When power is restored the controller will automatically power up and start receiving data again, and uploading it to the webserver. There will be a gap in the data for the time that there was no power. Remember, this is an information system, not an alarm system. It is inconvenient but not a risk if there is a gap in coverage.

What does the warranty cover?

Replacement of faulty components, assuming that they have not been subjected to maltreatment. Year 1 warranty is included in price of equipment. Subsequent years, warranty may be purchased costing ≈ 10% of equipment price.

Warranty based on return to base. Typically if someone has a problem we will send a replacement part same day for next-day delivery and request that the original part is returned afterwards.

What if I forget my login and password?

Your login will be your e-mail address. If your forget you password, you can ask to be reminded on the Forgotten Password just below the password box at the top of every page.

Who is using the system?

Just Checking is being used by 70 local authorities/NHS trusts throughout UK. We will gladly supply references.
